Heinrich Böll Scholarships are prestigious scholarships awarded annually to international students wishing to study in Germany. These scholarships are named after the Nobel Prize-winning German author Heinrich Böll and are funded by the Heinrich Böll Foundation, a political foundation affiliated with the German Green Party.

Masters Studies:
Non-EU students: €934 per month plus various individual allowances, possibly health insurance; tuition fees are in certain cases possible in Germany.

EU students: varies, max. €812 plus €300 book money per month; tuition fees not possible in Germany but possible to a limited extent in other countries.

The scholarship is awarded for the regular period of study, may be extended by one semester.

PhD Studies:
Non-EU students: €1,200 per month plus €100 mobility allowance per month, plus various individual allowances; tuition fees are not possible.

EU students: €1350 per month basic scholarship plus €100 per month research costs allowance; tuition fees are not possible in Germany but possible to a limited extent in other countries.

The scholarship is awarded for three years as a rule (two years, may be extended at most by 12 months)

Requirements

To be eligible for a Heinrich Böll Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in a degree program at a recognized university or institution of higher education in Germany
  • Demonstrate academic excellence and achievement
  • Show a strong commitment to social justice, democracy, civil society, human rights, and sustainable development
  • Have a good command of the German language (B2 level or higher) or English language (C1 level or higher)
  • Have a clear and realistic study plan and career goals
  • Have limited financial resources or come from a disadvantaged background
