In addition to financial support, Vanier CGS recipients are also invited to participate in a range of professional development activities, including leadership training and networking opportunities, that are designed to support their academic and research goals.

Requirements

To be eligible for the Vanier CGS, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Be nominated by a Canadian institution with a quota at which they want to study for doctoral studies.
  • Have a strong academic record, with a minimum of an A average (or equivalent) in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent. The candidate must have completed a Master's degree or a Bachelor's degree with honours.
  • Demonstrate exceptional research potential and a strong commitment to contributing to their respective fields and communities.
  • Be pursuing their first doctoral degree (including joint undergraduate/graduate research programs such as MD/Ph.D., DVM/Ph.D., JD/Ph.D.) at the nominating institution. Note that only the first doctoral degree is eligible for funding through the Vanier CGS.
  • Not have already received a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC to undertake or complete a doctoral degree.
  • Be pursuing doctoral studies on a full-time basis.
