She and her siblings created the Singing McEntires with the assistance of their mother, who helped them perform at community events and record music for a small label.

Later, McEntire enrolled at Southeastern Oklahoma State University to pursue teacher preparation.

She continued to perform on occasion as well, and country singer Red Steagall overheard her singing at a rodeo event.

Steagall was attracted to McEntires singing voice and helped her land a recording deal with PolyGram/Mercury Records in 1975 that same year, she and her mother moved to Nashville, Tennessee.

McEntires albums and singles were issued by PolyGram/Mercury during the course of the subsequent years, although they met with only modest success.

McEntires music gained more traction in the early 1980s thanks to a succession of top ten country hits, such as (You Lift Me) Up to Heaven, Im Not That Lonely Yet, and her debut numberone Cant Even Get the Blues.

However, McEntire grew increasingly dissatisfied with her career path and joined MCA Records in 1984.
